Ohhhh.... I don't know remotely enough to evaluate that theory, but I like it. I'd have to rethink my assumptions on what Vergil was letting himself do in the Aeneid if it's true, though. You have to be pretty confident to insert something like this just for for yourself and whoever else understands it (who better not be the boss...)
this bit is crazy to me! they just chucked an old man into the ocean! that can't be sportsmanship! unfortunately i'm not sure if there's an original reference; there's nothing like it in the iliad, and i'm not as familiar with other ancient greek/roman works
